Woman dies when her parachute fails to open properly

Monday 28 May 2012

A 39 year old woman died on Sunday during a parachute jump in Ocaña, Toledo, when her main parachute failed to open completely getting tangled with the emergency chute. It happened at 1pm close to the Ocaña airdrome, when the woman, Eva Azori García, from Valdemoro in Madrid, carried out her second jump of the day. She had ten months experience and carried out 24 previous jumps, according to the Parachuting Centre at the airdrome. Conditions were good and she jumped alone. Given the main parachute was not fully open she hit the ground at faster speed than normal, and that was the cause of her fatal injuries. However the centre said that a close look at the equipment indicated that she had activated the emergency chute without having completely unhooking from the main chute, as standard emergency procedures state, with the consequence that the two chutes got tangled. An official investigation has been opened to investigate. The parachute itself was new, made from a top manufacture, and had only been used for seven previous jumps. The others at the parachute centre were very upset, given that Eva was well loved by everybody.
