Duke of Palma prepared to admit guilt in the Nóos Institute case

Tuesday, 1 May 2012

The Duke of Palma, Iñaki Urdangarín has said, via his lawyer, that he is prepared to declare himself guilty if he does not have to go to jail. Both his lawyer and ex partner, Diego Torres, want to see such an arrangement. It would mean he would have to return the public money taken in Valencia and Baleares in the Nóos Institute affair, some 3.5 million €, and a two year prison sentence. In Spain sentences of two years or less are automatically suspended if there is no previous conviction. Reports in the press indicate that the Ministry may accept the deal, provided it is revealed beforehand where the money has been sent. The sticking point comes between Urdangarín and Torres. The Duke has already told the judge that he only had an ‘institutional’ role in the Nóos Institute, passing all the responsibility to Torres. However that claim has been discredited by dozens of witness to appear later. Now Urdangarín and Torres have to decide who is paying how much of the 3.5 million €.
