Javier Lendínez vanished as if by magic in December 2008. He was a councillor in Marbella Town Hall and allegedly embroiled in the Malaya corruption. Investigators think he collected 18,000 € from Juan Antonio Roca, the Marbella municipal real estate assessor who is at the centre of the allegations. Lendínez was called to declare before Judge Torres, and was released with charges outstanding. At the end of 2008 when he should have started a nine month prison sentence for several real estate irregularities nobody could find him. Nothing has been seen or heard about him until yesterday when the La Opinion de Málaga published a photo they had been sent of Lendínez, it’s claimed in Borobudur on the island of Java, Indonesia. In the photo he is smiling with a local restaurant owner. Javier Lendínez is one of three fugitives from the Malaya case. Another ex councillor, Carlos Fernández, said he was going to do the Camino de Santiago in July 2006, only to flee instead to Argentina. Since then reports have put him in Tunisia or Morocco. He faces the most serious sentence, ten years in prison for the misuse of public funds. Also missing is José Manuel Carlos Llorca, who was linked to the Ballena Blanca and Forum Filatélico cases, while Esteban Guzmán, wanted in the Minutas case has also fled.
