Grand project in the Valencia region has resulted in nothing as a fire has converted the controversial Lodos Spa in Torrevieja into ashes. Work on the project was paralysed six years ago because it was realised it invaded the Las Salinas Nature Park, and since then the building has been abandoned, apart from becoming a refuge for the homeless and a playground for the young. Firemen were called out at 3,30 on Monday afternoon to the spa and pergola which was designed by the architect Toyo-Ito and which has now been destroyed by the flames. The wooden structure in the form of a snail was no match for the fire. Police think the fire was an act of vandalism but they arrived late. A sophisticated video system designed to act as security and to alert police and the Guardia Civil to problems broke down some months ago.
