shots were fired, police found two women dead, the sniper and a fourth person

Thursday, 17 February 2011

Two people were killed Thursday by a sniper who opened fire on pedestrians on a busy street in this southeastern Spanish city.

Police arrested two men after the shootings.

The arrest was carried out by members of an elite National Police unit who forced their way into a house in which a sniper had holed up located near a hospital in the heavily traveled area of Cartagena.

Official sources said that the shooting could be linked to a settling of scores among common criminals fighting over control of drug corners.

The sniper, who was shot in the head by police, was rushed to a hospital for emergency surgery.

Sources close to the investigation told Efe that the suspects in the case have criminal records including violent crimes and drug trafficking.

Police who were dispatched to the scene of the shootings saw the man firing indiscriminately – at least 60 rounds, they said – from the windows of the home into the street.

Inside the home from which the shots were fired, police found two women dead, the sniper and a fourth person"
